North Korea Fires Cruise Missile, Anti-Aircraft Missile

Pyongyang Continues to Develop Weapons Arsenal

North Korea launched a super-large cruise missile and a new anti-aircraft missile on Saturday, according to the North Korean state media. The launches come as North Korea continues to develop its weapons arsenal, despite international pressure and sanctions. North Korea has been increasing its weapons development under leader Kim Jong-un, and has forged closer military and political ties with Russia. The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of providing artillery shells, ballistic missiles, and other military equipment to Russia. Saturday's launches are the latest in a series of weapons tests conducted by North Korea in recent months. In January, North Korea tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that could potentially reach the United States. The ICBM test was widely condemned by the international community, and prompted the United States and its allies to impose new sanctions on North Korea.

Condemnation from US, South Korea

The United States and South Korea have condemned Saturday's missile launches, calling them a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The US State Department said that the launches "underscore the urgent need for the international community to hold the DPRK accountable for its reckless behavior." South Korea's Foreign Ministry said that the launches "are a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions and pose a serious threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region." North Korea has not commented on the international condemnation of its missile launches. However, Pyongyang has repeatedly defended its weapons development program, saying that it is necessary to deter aggression from the United States and its allies.
